Confederate Submarine - the H. L. Hunley
The H. L. Hunley, first known as the Fish Boat, was a Confederate submarine that was launched in July of 1863. She was the 1st combat submarine to sink a warship. She was sunk 3 times and lost a total of 21 crew. She was 22 meters long and was named after her inventor Horace Lawson Hunley. He lost his life in the 2nd sinking. After the 3rd sinking the Hunley remained submerged until she was raised in 2000 and is now on display in Charleston, SC. |
